The application of BYK additive in FRP molded grille

with the development of FRP industry, people's requirements for FRP products have gradually increased, especially for some export products, the requirements for surface quality, flame retardancy, smoke density and so on are quite high. However, domestic raw materials cannot fully meet the requirements, which depends on the specific requirements of the type, performance and accuracy of the experimental machine. 1. BYK s-6665 solves the problem of sticking on the surface of products

because the molded FRP grille is a mold opening operation, the oxygen in the air inhibits the polymerization of free radicals, affecting the complete curing of the resin, and there is a problem of sticking on the surface, which affects the apparent quality. Some users use the method of adding wax to the resin, but it cannot be completely solved. Because the room temperature is different, the solubility of paraffin in the resin is different, which requires paraffin with different melting points to adjust, which is generally difficult to do in China. On the other hand, when paraffin is precipitated, a uniform isolation layer cannot be formed on the resin surface, and the anti sticking effect is not ideal. On the contrary, it will affect the uniformity of the surface color of the product. In addition, the addition of wax in the resin affects the interface adhesion between the resin and glass fiber, reducing the strength of the composite. Therefore, adding paraffin can not only solve the problem, but also bring many negative effects. To solve this problem, BYK has researched and developed s-6665 additive, which is a dispersion of microcrystalline wax, and can be used for o-benzene, m-benzene, vinyl, dicyclopentadiene and their mixed resins in the operating temperature range of 10~50 ℃. It forms a dense and uniform crystal film on the surface of the product to prevent the polymerization of oxygen. Due to its wide temperature range, s-6665 can be used in different seasons throughout the year. In addition, according to the process characteristics of molded grille, we suggest adding s-6665 when casting resin glue for the last time, which can make the operation more economical and effective and avoid side effects

2. BYK s-740 and s-750 reduce styrene volatilization

in the mold opening operation of FRP grille, the resins mentioned above have quite high styrene volatilization. The specially researched and developed s-740 and s-750 additives can effectively inhibit styrene volatilization, meet the requirements of environmental protection, and avoid the adverse effects of paraffin resin. Because s-740 combines paraffin with a specially developed adhesive, it cannot form a closed wax surface, which can effectively reduce the volatilization of styrene while maintaining excellent interlayer adhesion. It is recommended to be used for o-benzene resin

s-750 can form very fine wax grains on the surface of the resin. Their surfaces carry a polar component, which can isolate them from each other and allow the monomer in the second layer to penetrate the wax grains to produce good interlayer bonding. It is recommended for DCPD, meta benzene and vinyl resins

both s-740 and s-750 contain wax, which can not only inhibit the volatilization of styrene, but also solve the problem of sticky surface of molded grille. In particular, s-740 and s-750 are more suitable for gratings with quartz sand or cover plate from the perspective of sustainable development of enterprises

3, bykw -940 improve color stability

when the molded FRP grille is used in a large area, the product color is required to be uniform, stable and free of color difference, which is not easy to do for manual molding. On the other hand, because the pigment paste used in China is not stable in quality, it is easy to cause floating color and blooming, and also affect the surface quality of products. W-940 is a multi-functional molecular structure, which can adsorb on the surface of particles to form a complex, so as to prevent precipitation and color separation. Moreover, it is a wetting and dispersing agent, which can improve the wetting and dispersing state of the filler in the resin, shorten the batching process, reduce the mixing time, and prevent the adverse consequences of temperature rise caused by long-term mixing of the resin mixture. In a word, w940 has a positive effect on the wetting, dispersion and stability of filler in resin, and can improve the uniformity of product color and surface quality

4. The help of BYK w-985 to low smoke density flame retardant products

with the popularization and application of FRP grille, especially export products, strict requirements are put forward for flame retardancy and smoke density. Halogen containing flame retardants (such as decabromodiphenyl ether) and antimony trioxide are usually added in China, but this only meets the requirements of oxygen index. Since halogen containing flame retardants emit a large amount of dense smoke and toxic gases when burning, which directly endanger human health and even life, there are requirements for smoke density of FRP at home and abroad. China has also gradually raised awareness in this regard and issued the standard gb-8323. However, how to make flame-retardant FRP products with low smoke density is still a problem for many enterprises, and the use of w985 additive can help achieve this goal. We know that aluminum hydroxide is a cheap and smokeless flame retardant filler, but it is effective only when the content is high. It is reported that halogen-free, high flame retardant and low smoke density FRP products can be prepared by compounding phosphorus containing flame retardant app with aluminum hydroxide and adding w985 additive, which can meet the flame retardant standards of S3 Sr2 and S4 Sr2. The smoke density is only 1/10 of that of halogen-containing resin, and has good physical and mechanical properties, as shown in Table 1

w985 is a wetting and dispersing agent of BYK, which can improve the dispersion of filler, reduce the interaction between filler particles and reduce the viscosity of the system. At present, some users use the method of adding styrene to press the "clamping" key to increase the amount of filler, and the effect is not obvious. This is because styrene changes the apparent viscosity of the resin, which cannot solve the wetting and dispersion problems of the filler, and has little effect on the viscosity reduction of the filler and resin system. Therefore, when 1%w985 of filler amount is added to the mixture of filler and resin, the viscosity reduction effect is far better than that of styrene with 10phr. In addition, styrene is a low molecular substance, and a large amount of addition will cause defects such as product shrinkage and brittleness. This method is not advocated in the production process

Table 2 shows the oxygen index of FRP made of unsaturated resin with AP422 flame retardant, aluminum hydroxide, 1%w985 and 30% glass fiber felt. It can be seen that with the help of w985 additives, only 50phr aluminum hydroxide is added, and the oxygen index is 24, but increasing the amount of aluminum hydroxide to 100phr and compounding phosphorus flame retardant can make the flame retardancy of FRP reach V0 level

in a word, BYK additive is an excellent process additive, which plays a positive role in improving the surface quality and process performance of molded FRP grille. With the improvement of domestic manufacturers' requirements for products and the deepening of their understanding of additives, BYK additives will be more and more widely used in the whole FRP industry.
